The ASFB Touring Guide to the 2001 Workshop/Conference

If you are hiring a car then Bunbury is fairly easy to get to. Most importantly, when you pick up your hire car, please ask for a map of WA. The trip down to Bunbury will only take a couple of hours. National "Highway 1" will take you the whole way to Bunbury so if you follow the signs for Highway 1, you shouldn’t have any problems. In more detail, the simplest way would be to depart the domestic airport and turn south onto Tonkin Hwy. Leach Hwy comes directly off Tonkin Hwy and will take you towards Fremantle. Once on Leach Hwy, you will need to travel approximately 15 kilometres until you arrive at the Kwinana Fwy turn off. Head south on the Kwinana Fwy turning right at the end. Kwinana Fwy has just recently been extended to Safety Bay Road. Once you have reached the end of Safety Bay Road, turn left on to Ennis Avenue. This road will take you right down to Bunbury although it does go through a few name changes. Ennis Avenue turns into Mandurah Rd. Mandurah Road turns into Fremantle Road. Fremantle Road will take you on the Mandurah Bypass, and then turns into the Old Coast Rd that takes you over the Dawesville Channel and down to Bunbury.

If all else fails, follow the signs to Mandurah and then Bunbury!

Once in Bunbury, everything is in close proximity to the conference centre. Shops, restaurants, pubs and much of the accommodation are all within walking distance. You may even wish to leave the car at home and travel to Bunbury by public transport.

The best means of getting to Bunbury, via public transport, is by a train called the Australind, which departs daily from the Perth Train Station (PTS). It is advisable to make a reservation for this service on 13 10 53 (WA local call fee) or 1800 099 150 (Interstate local call fee). The Australind departs at 9:30 am and 5:45 pm (daily), arriving at the Bunbury Passenger Terminal (BPT) at 11:45 am and 8:00 pm, respectively. On Fridays there is an extra service provided by road coach. This bus leaves from the Wellington St Tourist Coach Stand (adjacent to the Transperth Bus Station), departing at 7:00 pm and arriving at the BPT at 9:30 pm. Arrival and departure times can be checked by phoning (08) 9326 2813 or see the link to the Train Timetables website, under Accommodation, About Bunbury.

The return trip from Bunbury to Perth departs from the BPT at 6:00 am and 2:30 pm (daily), arriving at the PTS at 8:30 am and 4:55 pm, respectively. On Sundays there is an extra service provided by road coach. This bus leaves from the BPT, departing at 4:00 pm and arriving at the Wellington St Tourist Coach Stand in Perth at 6:40 pm.

The Perth Train Station and Transperth Bus Station lie next to each other in Wellington Street on the northern side of the Perth CBD. If you’re flying into the Perth Domestic Terminal, and want to travel by taxi to the PTS, it will cost approximately $20 and will take about 20 minutes to arrive just a few steps from the ticket booking office. If you want to save some cash then bus # 37 or # 39 leave every 30 minutes or so from the airport, taking 50 minutes to arrive at the PTS. However these buses go to the Perth City Busport on the south side of the CBD, and you’ll have a 15 minute walk or will have to catch a CATS bus (Central Area Transit Service) which is a free service and runs frequently to the PTS.

The return trip to Bunbury costs A$38.40, with concessions given if you have an International Student Card or a WAGR Student Identification card. The train is comfortable and comes with toilets and a kiosk. Luggage is okay as long as you don’t bring the kitchen sink. When arriving at the BPT, a transit bus service will be available to take you to the Bunbury Tourist Bureau, which is located close to the Lord Forrest Hotel and other accommodation. This service is free, and runs every day except Sunday.

There are also bus services that leave for the South West via Bunbury from the East Perth Terminal. They take just over 3 hours to get to Bunbury, and are a good alternative if you want to travel further south, as they go as far as Pemberton and Albany. These buses are called the SW1 and S3. You can make reservations by calling the number given above or see the link to the WAGR website, under Train Timetables.

Alternative Travel to Bunbury

For any travellers wishing to find alternative travel arrangements other then suggested above, please email ASFB2001@fish.wa.gov.au to list your interest in sharing a hire car or alternative travel arrangements. Please list your name and flight details (both ways).

Please note that the committee will try to accommodate all requests to the best of our ability but there is no guarantee. Such travel arrangements will depend on the number of delegates arriving around the same time and the number of hire cars available. A list of delegates and their arrival and departure times will be kept and confirmed when a car is full and is booked. It is a first come first served basis.

Please note that bookings will depend on arrival and departure time and therefore we may not be able to coordinate such travel arrangements if your flight comes in at a time when no one else is arriving.
